When Is a Dental Crown Necessary?
There are several reasons why your dentist may recommend a crown. This type of treatment may be right for you if you have:
Tooth Decay
While small cavities can be repaired with a filling, larger areas of decay will require a crown for added stability and reinforcement.
Broken Tooth
If you have a tooth that is cracked or fractured, a dental crown can fit over the tooth to hold it together and restore full function.
Dental Discoloration
Surface stains can be addressed with teeth whitening. However, deep dental discoloration can be concealed with a tooth-colored cap.
Root Canal-Treated Tooth
When infection enters the pulp of a tooth, root canal therapy is necessary. Your dentist may add a crown for extra reinforcement.
A Missing Tooth
Crowns can restore dental implants, as well as natural teeth. Once the implant heals, your dentist can attach your new restoration.
Types of Dental Crowns
Temporary
Typically made from acrylic or composite resin, temporary crowns protect your teeth while permanent crowns are being made. Temporary crowns are designed to last one to three weeks.
Traditional
Designed to last between five and 15 years, permanent traditional crowns can be made from metal alloy, dental ceramic, porcelain, zirconia, or porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM).
Implant-Supported
Implant-supported caps are quite similar to the ones that fit over natural teeth. Your Mount Vernon, NY, dentist attaches it to an implant using cement or screw retention.
Same-Day
Qualifying patients can have same-day restorations placed. Instead of sending your case to a lab, Dr. Stein can use CEREC® technology to create a custom porcelain crown in our office during the same appointment.
